What is a Blogging Niche?
Let’s start with the basics first.
What exactly the blog niche means?
A blog niche is the topic area that you’ll be focusing your blog content around.
As a blogger when you start your blog, you will have two options: Whether you can write about everything or you can write about one thing.
When you write about one and only thing then that topic is your blog niche.
Now the next question may come in your mind “Why should I focus on a niche, if I can write about everything on my blog?”
Well, that’s a legit question.
So, let me explain why you should focus on one and only niche…
Why you should Focus on One and Only Niche?
Well, my friend, there is no internet police that will come and break down your door if you don’t focus or stick with one niche.
And for your information, there are many peoples who have found success with a much more scattered approach.
Here is a good example:
Arianna Huffington started The Huffington Post now known as HuffPost in 2005. The Huffington Post is not a niche-focused blog and it focuses on almost everything including politics, business, tech, finance, lifestyle, books, entertainment, etc.
Today this is one of the most successful website on the internet which earns more than $250 million revenue every year
Here is another example of a less broad niche than the Huffington Post.
Brian Lam founded The Wirecutter in 2011. It is a product review site that focuses on almost every product like Electronics, home gardening, kitchen appliances, money, travel, health, etc.
This is again a very successful website that makes more than a million-dollar revenue.
Now you must be thinking wow that’s great, I should also start a blog like this and I will be also making million-dollar revenue year.
Well, my friend let me give you a reality check.
Do you know there are hundreds of expert writers are writing for these blogs.
Here from experts, I am trying to tell you that there are hundreds of peoples who are experts in let’s say fiance are especially writing about finance on The Huffington posts. Similarly, who are experts in technology are focusing on the tech column on the Huffington Post and so on. The same applies to Wirecutter, Business Insider, Forbes, and other similar websites.
Next, do you know they spend millions of dollars every year on the content, writers, promotion, marketing, technology, etc..?
And as you are reading this guide, I believe you don’t have currently hundreds of writers and Millions of dollars money to invest in your blog.
So, if you don’t have these resources then it is obvious that you will be not able to compete with these bulls in the industry and you will eventually quit blogging and say Blogging is a scam, it don’t work, etcetera, etcetera.
That’s why I always recommend my readers to start a blog with a one-track mind, having one purpose, one goal.
Now let me quickly tell you how a niche-focused blog can be easily successful and profitable in 2020.
With a niche focus blog:
- You showcase expertise: If you want to be seen as an authority or expert in something, you must define what is something. Because you can’t be an expert in everything be it tech, fashion, lifestyle, food, and others.
- You get a loyal audience: By blogging about a specific niche, you draw the attention of a very narrow audience who have a genuine interest in your topic. So, if they like your content for the first time then they are likely to visit your blog again and again.
- You will have a better Monetization Model: When you get the highly targeted audience to your blog, it will be very easy for you to effectively promote the product and services they are highly interested in.
- Google Rank you higher: When you focus on a single topic, it helps your blog content rank higher in google due to topical relevance. When you have lots of content on your blog revolving around a specific niche, Google treats you as an expert in the field and rank your blog higher in the search result. In fact with the Google E-A-T Algorithm Update, It is more important to showcase yourself as an expert and authority in your niche to rank higher in Google.
- It will be easy to build a Community: When like-minded people visit your blog, it will be easy for you in every aspect of blogging, be it building a targeted email list, running a social media campaign, building an engaging community and much more.
Now you know it very well that how choosing a perfect blogging niche is crucial for your blog success.
Let’s start brainstorming the topics and find a perfect niche for your blog.
How to Brainstorm Ideas for Your Blog Niche?
Don’t have an idea about what to blog about?
At this point in this process, you just need to brainstorm ideas.
Yeah no need to think about if the idea will work or not, we will validate your ideas with different aspects in the next section.
For right now, our goal is to come up with a big list of topics you think you might want to blog about.
Let’s get started…
1. Make a List of All the Things You’re Interested In
Start by thinking about the things you love to do or would love doing if you had the chance.
For example, If you are interested in Photography then you can add photography in your niche list for now.
As earlier mentioned for now don’t think about whether or not it would make a good blog niche.
Currently, your list might look something like this:
- Graphic designing
If you look at your long list of ideas, you’ll probably find that some of your ideas would make a better blog niche than others in this list. So start shortlisting your list.
2. Think About the Articles, Magazines and Books You Read Frequently
What topics do you read about the most on the internet?
Which magazines do you subscribe to?
Which was the last book you read?
If you ask these questions to yourself, then you might find that you have a keen interest in some areas. Just add those areas to your list and see if they bring up any clear ideas for your blog’s niche.
3. Note down your hobbies and experiences
What do you love doing in your free time?
What you would enjoy learning?
What do you have a lot of experience doing?
For example, You love gardening in your free time or maybe you enjoy learning about cooking or maybe you have a good experience in working with Excel sheets or powerpoint presentation.
Write these all down.
4. Note down significant things You’ve Accomplished recently
There are many people who share their personal experience of accomplishing a goal and teach people how they can achieve the same.
For example, Michelle from Making Sense of Cents got out of $40,000 student loans and now she helps other people get out of debt through her blog.
Similarly, you may also have accomplished some significant goals in your life.
Like- you may have lost your weight, got out of debt, had a very long relationship, had a very successful marriage or it could be anything that most people struggle to accomplish.
Micro Niche Concept
At this point of time, you must have a list of Potential blog niche ideas.
You’re getting there, but it’s still too early to commit to anything that appears promising.
Let me introduce you to the Micro niche concept.
So, what is actually a micro-niche?
In general, micro niches are the sub-niche of the core-niche and it represents a small part of the audience from a broader niche.
Thinking about the shoe example, a micro-niche could be formal shoes, sports shoes, casual shoes, shoes for men, shoes for women etcetera, etcetera.
Take another example, Let’s say you found that Technology is something that excites you and you want to start a Tech blog.
But do you know if you start a tech niche blog then chances of getting success in a year or two will be very less. Because there are already hundreds of big authority tech blogs like Tech radar, Tech advisor, Life wire, Toms guide, Toms hardware, etc.
And it is obvious that you can’t compete with them with the very limited resources you currently have.
So, you should think smartly and choose a micro-niche that comes under the broad tech niche.
However one of the major drawbacks of a micro-niche blog is that the growth of your blog will be limited.
There will be very few people who visit your blog, after all, only people who are interested in something specific will visit your site.
But I never think like that, Let me show explain to you with a visual graphic.
From the above graphic, you can clearly understand that when you have a targeted niche, it is likely that your audience is more interested in the area you are talking about on your blog.
So, it will be more easy for you to build an engaging audience, effective email list, beat the competition, effective monetization on the blog and much more.
Now you must be wondering how to get the idea of micro-niche.
Perhaps the simplest way to find a micro niche is to comb through the category on Amazon or other big e-commerce sites.
When you will visit Amazon category page, It will show you all the different department amazon deal with.
Now treat all these as the Core niche.
So, now select a core niche to find out the micro-niche related to this core niche.
To demonstrate this, lets select “Health.” This should take you to the category page where potential micro-niches are detailed on the left panel.
Now from here, you can get the idea of some good micro-niche related to your core niche.
Now the next question you might have in your mind that What if I am interested in something that is not listed on Amazon?
Well, then I have another good idea for you to find a micro niche for your blog.
All you have to do is find the top 10 big blogs in your niche and check out the category.
Lets’s understand with an example:
Let’s say you want to start a health niche blog, so you can visit healthline.com (most popular blog in health niche) and get the idea of a micro-niche in health core niche for your blog.
Similarly, you can visit verywellfit.com and check out their category to find out a good micro-niche for your blog.
So rather than entering in a highly competitive health niche, you can focus on a micro niche like Cardio, Yoga, Nutrition, Depression, etc.
I hope you got my point.
Now it’s time to validate the list you brainstormed
By now you should have a few ideas of what you want to blog about.
But how do you know if your niche will actually translate into a successful blog and attract readers?
Well now to validate those ideas, ask yourself these 5 questions mentioned below and if you get the positive answer then congrats you have successfully got a perfect niche for your blog.
But if you hit a negative answer- then no problem spend some more time and head back to the drawing board and find a new niche to blog about.
So, are you ready to answer these questions?
let’s get started…
Question 1: Will I love writing at least 50+ posts on this niche without worrying about Money?
You found a lucrative niche for blogging.
Created your blog.
Start publishing a post every week.
But within 3-6 months, your number of post decrease to One per month.
Then it slows down even more…
And Finally, you quit blogging and start finding another lucrative blogging niche.
This is the common scenario with most of the bloggers.
People get into a niche just because they think others are making so much money and if they start in the same niche then probably they will be also able to make the same amount of money.
Now the problem with this approach is that in addition to facing stiff competition, your interest will likely diminish over time.
So, it is very important to not choose a niche just because you think it’ll make money for your blog.
Pick a niche you are you’re genuinely interested to write or talk about.
Another reason why many people fail in their niche is because, they often don’t have enough knowledge in their selected niche.
If you are planning to build a successful blog, you need to be able to provide content that your readers will find helpful and solve their problems.
I am telling you to be a professional expert in your niche but still, you should select a topic that you know a reasonable amount about.
When someone visits your blog they expect that you have at least some degree of expertise within your topic.
Afterall tell me yourself would you want to learn cooking tips from someone who doesn’t even know how to make Maggi or boil milk.
Of course not.
Then the same rule applies to your readers too…
That’s why It is important to ask yourself “Will I love writing at least 50+ posts on this niche without worrying about Money?“
If your answer is “Yes” then move to Question No 2.
Question 2: Are there enough people interested in reading this topic?
This is again a important question to ask before you pick a blog niche.
Even if you believe you have a brilliant idea for your blog, you may struggle to succeed unless you find a niche that attracts enough audience.
Thankfully, this can be easily found out with the help of a good keyword research tool.
If you don’t know anything about keyword research, check out our beginner’s guide to keyword research.
Basically, a keyword research tool will help you find out exactly how many people are searching for a keyword (term) in your niche every month.
So here’s what you need to do:
Let’s say you want to blog about “Yoga”(Just an example). Go to the KW finder tool and enter your main keyword into the search box.
Now within a click, this tool will tell you how many peoples are searching for the main keyword in your niche.
So in our example, almost 1.8 million people search for ‘Yoga’ every month on Google.
So, definitely, there are lots of audiences interested in yoga.
But you don’t have to stop here…
Now look for the other related keyword to your niche and check their volume (Average monthly search) with the help of KWfinder.
So continuing with our example, as you can see in the screenshot, this tool suggested hundreds of other keywords related to “Yoga” with their average search average volume. Like:
kundalini yoga – 145,000
yoga asanas – 91700
hatha yoga – 1,88,000
benefits of yoga – 82,700
and so on so forth.
KW finder not only helps you find search volume of a keyword but it also tells you how hard or easy it will be for you to rank in Google, who are your ideal competitors, what are their backlinks, etc.
What’s a safe number of monthly searches to constitute a good blog niche?
Well if you are able to find at least 50 good keywords in your niche with at least 250-10,000 monthly search volume then you will be easily able to build a profitable blog.
Note from my side: Don’t focus on a keyword with millions of search volume like I shown you in our above example of “Yoga”.
More search volume = More people focusing on the same terms = more competition = less chance of getting success.
A keyword with 250-10000 search volume is way better than a keyword with millions of search volumes for a new blog.
Question 3: Is This Niche Likely to Be Around for Years to Come?
While some blogs do manage to get success while focusing on momentary trends, but it is definitely not a good idea to focus on ephemeral trends.
See, you don’t want to end up starting again from scratch after six or eight months, so aim to choose a blogging niche that’s going to be around for years to come.
Let’s understand with an example:
Building a new blog that is solely focused on the upcoming 2020 Olympics game might not be a good idea.
Because it is obvious that as soon as Olympic 2020 will be over, no one will be interested in your blog.
Now you must be wondering “How to check if a niche is like to be around for years to come?”
Well a good sign that a blog niche is going to stick around, is if it’s already been around for a while!
So, before finalizing a niche, check out if there is already few blogs around for a while or not.
Plus you can make use of Google Trends for this.
For example, I entered the “Olympic games” in Google trend and as you can clearly notice in the below-given image that there were large amount of people interested only 2 times (2016 and 2017) in the last 5 years. Otherwise, the trend graph is almost flat in all the years.
And as you all might be knowing that the last main Olympic was held in 2016, that’s why the trend graph have an upward movement compared to others.
Now I entered “VPN” in Google trends and as you can see in the below attached screenshot, the search demand for VPN has been almost consistent from the last 5 years.
So, it is always a good decision to choose VPN over the Olympic games.
Question 4: Who are my competitors?
As in the last question I mentioned that there should be at least a few competition in your niche. Because If there’s no competition out there, then that could indicate that your niche just isn’t one that works well for a blog.
At the same time if the niche you are choosing is already targeted by many big blogs, then also you will struggle to build a successful blog.
For example, if you choose a broad health niche then you will find that there are hundreds of already very popular health blog on the internet who has been there from last 10 or even 20 years.
But at the same time if you choose a very narrow-focused micro-niche like “Paleo diet” then you will find that you will have very little competition in your targeted niche.
You can determine the kind of competition you will have in the niche by searching in Google for “Best [niche] blogs.”
Create a list of your competitor blogs.
And analyze all of them one by one with a good SEO tool like SEMrush.
All you need to do is enter the URL of your competitor blog into SEMrush and this tool will tell you everything about your competitor’s blog and check:
- How much traffic your competitor’s blog is getting.
- How many and which keywords of their blog are ranking in Google’s top position.
- How many links they have on their blog.
- Which sites linked to their blog
- and many more.
With all these stats you will be easily able to find out if you can compete with them or not.
Question 5: Can I make money from this niche?
Now finally the time has come to figure out whether you can actually make money from the niche you have selected or not.
Frankly speaking, if you are smart and creative enough then you can make money from pretty much any niche, as long as you have build a targeted audience.
Still, some blog niche are always going to make more money than others.
For example, Let’s say you create a blog around any of these niches.
- Free SMS
- Free wallpaper
- WhatsApp tips
- Free movie downloads
If you check on KWFinder there are more than millions of peoples search for these keywords every month on the internet, which means you will get very high traffic, if you create your blog on these niches.
But here is the sad reality.
Most probably you will struggle to build successful monetization model on your blog and won’t make much money.
So, it is better to find out all the possibilities of monetizing your blog in the start…
So how do you figure out if, and how, you can make money with your niche?
1. First thing first check out how other blogs in your niche make money:
Go and check out some popular blog in your niche and check if they:
- Display banner ads or other advertisements on their site
- Promoting affiliate product via review
- Sell their own course
- Offering premium service
- or anything else.
This will instantly give you some idea of the potential monetization options available to you.
For example, if you visit Making sense of cents, you will find that she monetize her blog with different models like the sponsored post, affiliate marketing, premium course, etc.
2. Next look at the available affiliate programs in your niche.
Affiliate marketing monetization model is something that is used by most of the popular blogs.
If you don’t know more about affiliate marketing then you can check out my Beginners guide to Affiliate marketing here.
In simple language affiliate marketing means, you promote the products of other people and get paid commissions for the sale.
To check out the available affiliate programs in your niche, Just go on Google and search “[your keyword] affiliate” or “[your keyword] affiliate program.”
Or it will be better if you directly visit an affiliate network like Shareasale and check all the available affiliate programs in your niche.
3. See if you can create and sell your own product
I am not telling you to start creating and selling your own products from day one.
But if you choose a niche where you will have enough opportunity to create and sell your own personalized product, nothing can be better than that.
For example: Brian dean is a very popular SEO expert who runs a blog named “Backlinko”. Backlinko is an SEO blog that focuses on actionable SEO tips, strategies and case studies.
If you analyze his blog then you will find that he does not have any display ads on his blog nor he using affiliate links on his blog posts nor promoting any products.
Then how he make money?
And he makes most of his revenue from only these two courses.
Similarly, if you visit Nerd fitness then you will find that they have also monetized their blog with Paid training and courses.
If there is any way you can add value – either by teaching or just compiling resources – it can be a great way to monetize your blog and make money out of it.
