So, It is always said that Keyword research is the foundation of every other SEO task you perform.

Some keywords are searched for lots and some are not. Some keywords are actually easy to rank than the others. The keywords you might think people use to find your content may be very different in reality.

So, never make your own assumptions.

If you optimize your content for the wrong keyword you may end up with attracting very few visitors or may the wrong sort of visitors.

Don’t worry much about it, below I am going to explain all the keywords metrics that you need to keep in mind while doing keyword research.

1. Search Volume

This keyword metric basically shows you the overall demand for a specific keyword.

In short, How many times a specific keyword was searched into Google by the people around the world or in a specific country.

Most of the Free and Paid Keyword research tool pulls their search volume data from Google Adwords, which was long considered as a trusted source for this data.

But from the past few years, Google has been consistently taking data away from SEOs.

So, most of the free keyword research tool is showing incorrect search volume.

How to Check Search Volume Of a Keyword Into SEMRush?

To check the search volume of a keyword, Enter your Keyword into Semrush search box to get a full overview of that keyword.

Average monthly search volume of a keyword represents the number of times the keyword was searched in the past 12 months divided by twelve.

Note: For Trending and seasonal keywords, the number of search volume can be lower or higher than the average volume in a certain months.

2. Organic Click-Through-Rate

Everyone knows that the number of Google searchers that click on the organic search result is way down.

And there is no secret why.

So the bottom line is search volume only gives you a small part of the story. To get the full story or how many clicks you’ll get if you rank on the first page, you also need to check the Organic CTR.

3. Keyword Difficulty

How do you decide that the keyword you have selected is too easy or too competitive to rank for?

It’s a good question to ask.

Because if you have selected the keyword that is highly competitive, you may find your website buried at the third or fourth page of Google search result.

But if you find a keyword which is less competitive, you have a good chance to rank your website in Google top 10 positions for that keyword.

Keyword difficulty is also known as Keyword competition is one of the most important metrics you should consider during the Keyword research process.

The keyword difficulty is indicated on a scale of 0 to 100, The lower the value of Keyword Difficulty, the higher the chances of ranking for that keyword in Google top position.

Pro Tip: If your site is new then try to target low competition keywords at first. As soon as your site start grows in authority, you can start targetting more competitive keywords.

4. Cost Per Click

This metric doesn’t matter a lot for you if you are just a blogger or SEO person.

Because CPC (cost per click) is one of the most important metrics for advertisers.

However, as an SEO guy, you can also consider Cost per click as an indication keyword’s commercial intent.

So, What is actually CPC?

CPC known as Cost per click is the amount paid by the advertiser for every time a person clicks on the advertisement showing in Google search result.

One thing you should know that CPC of a keyword is much more volatile than the search volume of a Keyword.

Because search demand of a keyword fluctuates on a monthly basis, but CPC of a keyword changes pretty much any day, an hour or even minute.

To check the cpc of a keyword, Enter your Keyword into Semrush search box to get a full overview of that keyword.

Under Paid search section, you’ll Find CPC (Cost per click) of the specific keyword.

5. Keyword Trends

One thing you should always keep in mind that some keywords search volume are dynamic in nature.

For Example: A keyword like “New Year Messages” will naturally spike around New year time while having probably zero search volume during the rest of the year.

So, Its always good to check if the keyword you have selected is growing fast or dying slow…

How to Check trend of a Keyword Into SEMRush?

To check the trend of a keyword, Enter your Keyword into Semrush search box to get a full overview of that keyword.

Under the Trend section, you can easily check the trend of the keyword. Basically is keyword demand growing fast or dying slow.



How to do keyword research With SEMRush

Step 1 – Create a list of seed words

First of all, you have to make a list of seed keyword also known as Primary or main keyword.

Actually what I have seen that most of the professionals or expert will tell you to brainstorm a list of primary words.

But if you are using SEMRush tool, you don’t need to do that.

Now you must be wondering why?

Because With the SEMRush tool, you are going to use a unique keywords research process where you will discover the keywords that our competitors rank for.

They may have spent their thousands of bucks and more than a hundred hours of precious time discovering the best keywords in your niche.

So, if you are going to do keyword research for the same niche, Then why do you want to waste your precious time?

Get a head start and copying them!

To begin this keyword research process, you have to make a list of 15-20 blog who are working on the same niche.

For Example: I run a blog where I teach people how to make a full-time income from their blogs.

So, here I have created a list of blogs who are working on the same niche:

This is just an example…

Now Open SEMRush tool and Go to the domain overview page and enter your first URL of the blog from the list you have created and then click the “Search” button.

On the next screen, you’ll be presented with the lots of metrics and data for the domain you had searched.

Scroll down a bit and click on the “View Full report” button under the “Top Organic keyword section.”

On the next screen, you’ll be presented with the list of all the keywords that your competitor’s website is ranking for in Google top 100 positions.

In my example: smartblogger.com is ranking for the 45,777 keywords in the top 100 positions of Google.

Now analyze the keyword list very carefully, and tick marks the boxes (showing before the keyword) that you would like to write the blog post again on your blog.

Make sure to check all the keywords metrics of a keyword before selecting the keyword, Try your best to choose those keywords which have medium search volume and less Keyword difficulty score.

Once you have selected 10 or more than 10 different seed keywords, Click the export button showing at the top right corner and choose “Export selected and finally click on the save as excel option.

Now do the same process again and again for the remaining blog URL on your list and make sure that you don’t end up selecting the same keyword again and again.

Once you have downloaded the list of keywords into 10 or more than 10 excel file, Open all the excel file one by one and copy all the seed keywords into one Single excel file.

Now as you have the master list of seed keyword that your competitors are ranking for, so now we will move to the next step of keyword research in SEO.

Step 2 – Use your Primary Keywords to find long-tail keywords

Now in step 2, you are going to use our primary keywords to find Low competition keywords which have the right amount of search volume.

So, Again Open SEMRush tool and navigate to Keyword Analytics >overview section appearing at the semrush left sidebar.

Enter your first primary or Seed keyword from the list you have created before and click on the Search button.

Scroll down a bit, there you will see Phrase match keyword section, Just click on View full report button to get all the phrase match keywords.

Now, click on the ‘Advanced filters’ button to apply some advanced filter, so that you can discover some effective Keywords.

Now you have to use the following value for the filters.

  • Set the search volume to a minimum of 100
  • and the ‘keyword difficulty score’ to a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 50 or 60.

Additionally, you set word count minimum to 4 and maximum to 10 to get more profitable long tail keywords.

Next, just hit the export button to export all the keywords.

Choose “All” and finally Click the blue XLSX button to export the keyword list into an excel list.

Repeat this process again and again for all the seed keywords from your master list.

Step 3 – Compile a Master List of long tail keywords with low competition

Once you finished with researching long tail keywords for all the Seed Keywords, open all the excel sheet (containing long tail keywords) one by one and then simply sort the list by search volume (largest to smallest)

Now, my friend you have the gold mine of low competitive keywords for more than 100 topics.

Write an article of more than 2,000 words on any of those keywords from the list.

And Now you also know that you have a very high chance of ranking in the top position into the Google search result for that keyword.
